How to download a RedGifs Video

Saving a RedGifs video takes less than 30 seconds. Here’s exactly how to do it, whether you’re on a computer, iPhone, or Android phone.

Table of Contents

1. Copy the RedGifs video URL

Head to RedGifs and find the video you want to save. Look at your browser’s address bar — you need a link that looks exactly like this:

https://www.redgifs.com/watch/examplevideo

On desktop: Click the address bar and press Ctrl+C (Windows) or Cmd+C (Mac) to copy.
On mobile: Tap the share icon on the video or in your browser, then choose Copy link.

2. Paste the URL into the downloader

Come back to this page and click inside the input box at the top. Paste the URL with Ctrl+V (Windows), Cmd+V (Mac), or a long-press tap on mobile. Make sure there are no extra spaces before or after the link — that’s the most common cause of errors.

3. Click Download and save the file

Press the Download Video button. The video is fetched from RedGifs in seconds. When the download link appears, click it to save the MP4 file to your device.

Alternatively: Right-click the download link and choose Save Link As… to choose exactly where the file is saved on your computer.

Tip: If your browser opens the video in a new tab instead of saving it, right-click the video and choose Save video as…

Troubleshooting

Running into an issue? Here are the most common problems and exactly how to fix them.

1. “Not a valid RedGifs URL” error

What it means: The URL you pasted isn’t in the format our downloader accepts.

How to fix it:

  • Make sure the URL starts with https://www.redgifs.com/watch/
  • Delete any extra text, parameters (?ref=…), or spaces from the URL
  • Check the URL doesn’t point to a profile, a search result, or the homepage — it must be a direct video page
  • Try copying the URL fresh from RedGifs rather than pasting a saved/forwarded link

Correct format: https://www.redgifs.com/watch/exactvideoid

2. “There was a problem getting the video” error

What it means: The downloader reached RedGifs but couldn’t retrieve the video. This is usually temporary.

How to fix it:

  • Wait 30–60 seconds and try again — high traffic can cause brief timeouts
  • Check that the video still exists on RedGifs. Open the URL directly in a new tab to confirm
  • Disable any browser extensions or ad blockers temporarily — they can sometimes intercept requests
  • Try a different browser or switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data
  • Clear your browser cache and reload this page

If none of the above works, the video may have been deleted, set to private, or RedGifs may have made a change on their end. Feel free to contact us so we can investigate.

3. The video opens in a new tab instead of downloading

This is a browser behaviour, not an error. The video is available — your browser is just previewing it instead of saving it.

How to save it:

  • Desktop: Right-click the download button or link and choose Save Link As… / Download Linked File
  • iPhone Safari: Long-press the link and tap Download Linked File
  • Android Chrome: Long-press the link and tap Download link
  • If the video opened in a new tab: Right-click the video itself (or long-press on mobile) and choose Save video as…

4. The download button does nothing

  • Make sure the URL is fully pasted into the input box before clicking Download
  • Disable any JavaScript blockers or strict privacy extensions
  • Try a different browser — Chrome and Firefox are most reliable
  • Check that you’re not in a private/incognito window with strict settings enabled

5. The downloaded file won’t play

All our downloads are standard MP4 (H.264) files. If the file won’t play:

  • Make sure the download fully completed — a partial download won’t play
  • Try opening it with VLC Media Player (free, plays everything)
  • On Windows, try the Movies & TV app or Windows Media Player
  • On Mac, use QuickTime Player
  • On iPhone/Android, the default gallery or video app should handle MP4 files natively
  • If the file size is suspiciously small (under 10KB), the download may have failed — try again

6. I can’t find the downloaded file on my phone

  • iPhone: Open the Files app → tap Browse → Downloads. To move it to Photos, tap the file, then tap the share icon and choose Save Video.
  • Android: Open your Files or My Files app and check the Downloads folder. It may also appear in your Gallery app under a Downloads album.
  • Samsung: Open My Files → Downloads.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about downloading RedGifs videos.

1. About this Downloader

What is this RedGIFs Gownloader?

It’s a free online tool that lets you save any public RedGifs video directly to your device as an MP4 file. Just paste the video URL, click Download, and the file is yours – no account, no app, no installation needed.

Is it free to use?

Yes, completely free. There are no paid tiers, no subscription fees, and no paywalls. Download as many videos as you want at no cost.

Do I need to create an account?

No account required. No email address, no sign-up, no personal information needed. Just arrive, paste your URL, and download.

Do I need to install anything?

Nothing to install. Everything runs in your browser. No browser extension, no desktop app, no plugins required.

Is this downloader safe?

Yes. Our tool fetches the video file directly from RedGifs’ servers and delivers it to you as a plain MP4. We don’t bundle any software, don’t inject anything into the file, and don’t require any permissions on your device.

What data do you collect?

We temporarily log IP addresses for security and abuse prevention only. We do not collect, store, or share what you download, your browsing history, or any personal information.

2. Downloading Videos

What URL format do I need?

You need a direct video watch link in this format: https://www.redgifs.com/watch/videoname. Profile URLs, search pages, tag pages, and the RedGifs homepage will not work — only direct watch links.

Where do I find the video URL on RedGifs?

On desktop, the URL is in your browser’s address bar when you’re watching the video. Click it and copy the whole thing. On mobile, tap the share icon on the video and select Copy link to get the direct URL.

What video format are the downloads?

All downloads come as MP4 files (H.264 video codec). MP4 is the most widely supported video format and will play on any device, operating system, or media player without conversion.

What video quality will I get?

We always fetch the highest resolution version available for that video — exactly as it was uploaded to RedGifs. There’s no compression or quality reduction on our end. If a video was uploaded in 1080p, you’ll download it in 1080p.

How long does a download take?

Generating the download link takes just a few seconds. The actual file download speed depends on your internet connection and the video’s file size, but most videos save within a few seconds to a minute.

Is there a download limit per day?

No limit. Download as many videos as you like — one, ten, or a hundred. There are no daily caps, cooldown periods, or restrictions.

Can I download multiple videos at once?

Currently, videos are downloaded one at a time. You can open multiple browser tabs and run separate downloads simultaneously as a workaround. Batch downloading is something we’re actively working on.

Can I download private RedGifs videos?

No. We can only access videos that are publicly viewable. If a video requires a login, has been set to private, or has been deleted from RedGifs, we have no way to retrieve it.

Can I download RedGifs GIFs specifically?

RedGifs stopped serving GIF files and now hosts everything as MP4 video — even content that looks like a GIF. So yes, all videos including looping GIF-style clips are downloaded as MP4, which is actually a better format (smaller file size, higher quality).

3. Devices & Browsers

Does this work on iPhone and iPad?

Yes. Open this page in Safari on your iPhone or iPad, paste the URL, and tap Download. When the link appears, press and hold it and select Download Linked File. The video saves to your Files app.

Does this work on Android phones?

Yes. Use Chrome or any Android browser. Paste the URL, tap Download, then long-press the download link and select Download link. The file saves to your Downloads folder.

Which browsers are supported?

All major browsers work: Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, Microsoft Edge, Opera, and Samsung Internet. Chrome and Firefox on desktop tend to give the smoothest download experience.

Does it work on Mac and Windows?

Yes, on both. Just use any modern browser. The downloaded MP4 will play in QuickTime (Mac), Windows Media Player, Movies & TV, or any media player like VLC.

Does it work on smart TVs or consoles?

Our downloader requires a browser with standard JavaScript support. If your smart TV or console has a full web browser (like on PlayStation or some Samsung/LG TVs), it should work. Alternatively, download the file on your phone or computer first and transfer it to your TV via USB or streaming.

Downloading videos for personal, private use is generally considered acceptable in most jurisdictions. However, redistributing downloaded videos, re-uploading them elsewhere, or using them for commercial purposes without the creator’s permission may infringe copyright. Always respect content creators and keep downloads for personal use only. If in doubt, consult a legal professional — we can’t provide legal advice.

Can creators see that I downloaded their video?

No. RedGifs does not expose download tracking data to creators, and our downloader operates independently of their platform. Your downloads are anonymous.

Do you store the videos I download?

No. We act as a pass-through — we fetch the file from RedGifs on your behalf and deliver it directly to you. We do not cache, store, or keep copies of any videos on our servers.

About RedGifs

What is RedGifs?

RedGifs is an adult video and GIF sharing platform that was created as the successor to Gfycat’s adult content section. It allows users to upload, share, and discover short video clips. The platform is popular for its fast streaming, high-quality playback, and ease of sharing short-form videos.

Why doesn’t RedGifs have a built-in download button?

RedGifs does not provide a native download option in their interface. To save a video without a tool like ours, you’d have to manually inspect the page source using your browser’s developer tools, locate the video element, extract the MP4 URL, and download it — a tedious process that requires technical knowledge. Our downloader handles all of that for you instantly.

Why do people download RedGifs videos?

There are many reasons: building personal collections, saving videos for offline viewing, keeping backups of content before it gets deleted or set to private, sharing with others via messaging apps, or using clips in personal creative projects. Whatever the reason, our tool makes it fast and simple.

Can I use downloaded RedGifs videos in my own projects?

Only if you have permission from the original creator. Downloaded videos are not automatically licensed for use in other projects. If you want to use a video commercially or in published content, reach out to the creator directly and ask for permission.

What’s the difference between RedGifs and Gfycat?

Gfycat was a general-purpose GIF and video hosting platform that shut down in 2023. RedGifs originally started as the adult content section of Gfycat and was spun off as its own independent platform. After Gfycat closed, RedGifs continued as a standalone site focused on short-form adult video content.
